BARRIO DE SANTA LUCIA



Este tradicional y pintoresco barrio es conocido principalmente por la hermosa Iglesia de Santa Lucía, misma que se empezó a construir a finales del siglo XVI, concluyéndose en 1620. Se caracteriza por su entrada rectangular enmarcado en cantera, vitral y espadaña. El atrio de la Iglesia de Santa Lucía funcionó como cementerio de la Ciudad hasta el año de 1821. Es en los años 50 cuando Torre Gamboa pintó un mural que representa el suplicio de Santa Lucía. En frente de la Iglesia se encuentra el parque del mismo nombre, llamado también Parque de los Héroes. Durante el dominio español, este espacio albergó una hermandad dedicada a asistir enfermos.

Santa Lucia Neighborhood


This traditional and picturesque neighborhood is known for the beautiful Church of Santa Lucia, which had its construction started in the late sixteenth century and finished in 1620. Its rectangular entrance framed in stone, stained glass and steeple characterize it. The atrium of the Church of Santa Lucia worked as a cemetery for the City until 1821. In the 50's Torre Gamboa painted a mural depicting the torture of St. Lucia. Santa Lucia park is located in front of the church. The park is also called Heroes Park (Parque de los Heroes). During Spanish rule, this space housed a brotherhood dedicated to assisting patients.

BARRIO DE SANTIAGO



La Iglesia de Santiago se encuentra en el primer pueblo de indígenas que los conquistadores encontraron al llegar a T'ho al cual nombraron Santiago el arco de la entrada principal del templo, se terminó de construir en 1637. El Parque de Santiago ha tenido desde sus inicios, un ambiente alegre y dinámico, propio de un barrio lleno de recuerdos. Este rincón meridano tiene una personalidad propia gracias a su entorno: salas de cine, su tradicional así como el característico Mercado Santos Degollado. En el barrio también se encuentran el Parque Zoológico del Centenario, construido en 1910 con motivo de la celebración de Independencia y el Museo de Historia Natural.

Santiago Neighborhood


The Church of Santiago can be found in the first Maya town that the conquistadors found when they arrived to T'ho. They named the arch of the main entrance of the temple Santiago and it was completed in 1637. Santiago Park has had since its beginnings a lively and dynamic atmosphere, typical of a neighborhood full of memories. This corner of Merida has its own personality thanks to its surroundings: movie theaters and traditional businesses like the traditional Santos Degollado market. In the neighborhood you can also find the Centennial Park Zoo (built in 1910 on the occasion of the celebration of Independence), and the Museum of Natural History.

BARRIO DE SAN SEBASTIAN




El barrio de San Sebastián es uno de los más antiguos y de mayor tradición en Mérida; desde tiempos muy antiguos se asentó hacia el suroeste de Mérida un pueblito maya, que al tiempo de la colonización se le nombró San Sebastián. Hay quienes creen que por él pasó la tropa de Montejo cuando llegó a T'ho. En este tradicional barrio se encuentra la Ermita de Santa Isabel que data del siglo XVII; antiguamente fue llamada como la ermita de nuestra señora del buen viaje, posiblemente por la posición cerca del camino real de Campeche.

San Sebastian Neighborhood


The San Sebastian neighborhood is one of the oldest and most traditional in Merida. Since ancient times a small Maya village was settled southwest of Merida, which at the time of settlement was named San Sebastián. Some believe that it happened when Montejo’s troops reached T'ho. In this traditional neighborhood one can find the Shrine of Santa Isabel dating from the seventeenth century and was formerly called the shrine of our lady of good voyage, probably for the position by the royal highway of Campeche.

BARRIO DE SANTA ANA






La Iglesia de Santa Ana fue construida a su vez en 1729, por el gobernador Capitán General Antonio de Figueroa y Silva, a quien apodaban "El manco". Una placa de piedra colocada en la fachada principal exterior del recinto, con inscripción en castellano antiguo, indica que allí reposan los restos mortales de su constructor. Tranquila y apacible, ideal para resguardarse de los rayos solares bajo las ramas de los árboles o disfrutar del fresco de las noches estrelladas, la plazuela de Santa Ana, es sede de tianguis y muestras artesanales y gastronómicas.

Santa Ana Neighborhood


The Church of Santa Ana was built in 1729 by Governor Captain General Antonio de Figueroa y Silva, who was nicknamed 'El manco' A stone plaque placed on the exterior facade of the enclosure, inscribed in Old Castilian, indicates that there lie the remains of its builder. Quiet and peaceful, ideal for avoiding the sun's rays under the branches of trees or enjoying the cool starry nights, the square of Santa Ana, hosts flea markets, craft fairs, and food fairs.

BARRIO DE SAN JUAN




La iglesia de San Juan fue construida sobre una capilla del siglo XVII, exactamente entre 1769 y 1770. El corredor, de influencia mudéjar, destaca dentro del conjunto que fue parte de un mesón público para los viajeros que existió detrás del templo, éste antecede a la sacristía y es quizá la última evidencia de la capilla original. El Arco de San Juan fue construido alrededor de 1690 para delimitar los límites de Mérida como parte de un posible proyecto para su fortificación, mismo que nunca se llevó a cabo. Este Arco es el de mayores dimensiones y se encuentra en la antigua salida al Camino Real a Campeche.

San Juan Neighborhood


The church of St. John (San Juan) was built on a XVII century chapel, right between 1769 and 1770. The corridor, with a Mudejar influence, stands within the set that was part of a public inn for travelers that was behind the temple. It precedes the vestry and is perhaps the last evidence of the original chapel. The Arch of San Juan was built around 1690 to delineate the limits of Merida as part of a possible project for fortification, which never took place. This arch is larger one and is found in the old exit to Royal Highway (Camino Real) to Campeche.

BARRIO DE SAN CRISTOBAL



En el bello barrio de San Cristóbal Museo de la Ciudad es un elemento cultural de gran importancia para la ciudad de Mérida, tanto por sus características arquitectónicas como por su valor histórico, ahí se encuentra el Ex Palacio Federal de Correos, el Mercado Lucas de Gálvez, el Mercado de San Benito, el Mercado de Artesanías, Bazar García Rejóny. La hermosa Iglesia de San Cristóbal, bajo la advocación de la Virgen de Guadalupe es sede cada 12 de diciembre de peregrinaciones y procesiones.

San Cristobal Neighborhood


In the beautiful neighborhood of San Cristobal, the City Museum is a cultural element of great importance to the city of Merida, both for its architectural features and for its historical value. There one can find the former Federal Mail buiding, the Lucas de Gálvez market , San Benito Market, Craft /artisanal Market, and the García Rejóny Bazar. The beautiful Church of San Cristobal, dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, is home to pilgrimages and processions every December 12th.

BARRIO DE MEJORADA


El Barrio de mejorada, con su Iglesia del siglo XVII, misma que sirvió a lo largo de su historia como un hospital, cárcel de mujeres y cuartel y que alberga en la actualidad la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, con su parque, donde se clavó el Primer Riel de Ferrocarril en la Península en 1870, es una parte esencial de la ciudad de Mérida. En este antiguo barrio también podemos encontrar el Museo de Arte popular en la Casa Molina, el Museo de la Canción Yucateca, los históricos Arco de Dragones y Arco de Puente así como el Centro Cultural del Niño Yucateco y el Museo del Ferrocarril


Mejorada Neighborhood


The Mejorada neighborhood, with its seventeenth century church (which was utilized throughout its history as a hospital), prison barracks for women, home to the Architecture school of the Autonomous University of Yucatan, and its park where the first rail for the Peninsula Train was struck in 1870 is an essential part of the city of Mérida. In the historic neighborhood we can also find the Museum of Popular Art in Casa Molina, the Museum of the Yucatecan Song, the historic Dragon and Bridge Arches, and the Cultural Center of the Yucatecan child and the Railway Museum.
