CENOTE XKEKEN

It is a closed type cenote inside a grotto, being its entrance a narrow tunnel where one descends using stairs carved in rock to the cenote. The sunlight coming through an opening in the top of the dome, gives the water a turquoise blue hue that lightens the water mirror, which is 30 meters long by 20 wide, with a minimum depth of 1 meter and a maximum of 20 meters.

It is managed by the Board of Units of Cultural and Tourist Services of the State of Yucatan (CULTUR) who cares for and maintains the quality of the tourist services by charging an entry fee. It is an ideal place for swimming due to its shallow depth. It is recommended to use life jackets, avoid using sunblocks and insect repellents as well as littering inside and outside the water body.

Located 7km southeast of Valladolid, this cenote is inside an underground chamber. You can observe stalactites and vivid turquoise waters lightened by the natural light that comes through a small opening on the central part of the dome. The water is shallow and so clean and clear that you can observe many fish.

It is located 159 km from Merida city. Take the Valladolid – Cancún highway. At kilometer 156, 3km before reaching the city of Valladolid, take the detour to the town of Dzitnup and 2km from there you’ll find the Unit of Cultural and Tourist Services, which manages the site and from where you get access to the Samulá and X-Kekén cenotes.
